The first Romanesque church building from around 1200 was destroyed during the Hussite Wars in 1424, and the church was rebuilt in the late Gothic style in the middle of the 15th century.
From 1670, the interior of the church was extensively baroqueised and the tower was given an 'onion dome'.
The outstanding Baroque painter Martin Johann Schmidt, known as "Kremser Schmidt", was commissioned by St Florian's Abbey to paint four important pictures for the high altar around 1800.
The church tower was given a new pointed roof in 1901 and is now almost 60 metres high.
